Sienna Miller on Broadway Critics, Jude Law and Her Triumphant Star Turn in London’s Flare Path
Sienna Miller is in high spirits as she arrives late one afternoon at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, her pooch Porgy happily in tow. (The newly groomed dog was sporting a green hair bow.) The 29-year-old actress is starring in arguably the single best-reviewed West End play of the year so far, Flare Path, Terence Rattigan’s 1942 drama set in a regional English hotel near a Royal Air Force base during World War II; Sheridan Smith (Legally Blonde) and James Purefoy (Rome) co-star. In Miller’s third professional stage venture to date (she made her Broadway debut in After Miss Julie in the fall of 2009) director Trevor Nunn’s revival confirms the actress as a genuine talent in her own right, not just the consort of various famous men, former fiancé Jude Law included. In a wide-ranging conversation, at once friendly and exuberant, Miller talked about life, art, the paparazzi and a whole lot more.
It’s wonderful to find you on the West End and in such a top-drawer production. How did this come about?
Trevor [Nunn] sent me the script. I read it and thought, on paper it’s a perfectly made play, but I just didn’t get it. Then Trevor and I went out for coffee and he said, “No, it’s Chekhov, actually; you have to look more deeply”—meaning that there are characters in the play who you know immediately, and they’re lovable and brave and fully formed, and then there are characters like mine [London actress Patricia Graham] who begin as something and end as something else. That transformation involves winning the audience round. Patricia isn’t as overtly lovable as a lot of the others, and one of my flaws is that I struggle with not being liked!
You and James Purefoy both play actors, in his case a Brit who has made it in Hollywood and returned home to rekindle a love affair with you. Does that make it easier to perform?
Not at all—well, perhaps James thinks so, but I don’t. I know tons of actors and I have no idea what they’re about, and vice-versa. I think that’s true of any profession. What is true is you understand the camaraderie between Patricia and Peter and their history and their sense of fun, and she doesn’t have that with Teddy [her bomber pilot husband of a year]. I think the tragedy for Patricia is that she is torn between two men and both are flawed. In the end, she chooses the greater good, which I think she will make work. Sometimes you have to do the right thing—and that’s a situation that does resonate with certain women.
Photos from the last few candid sightings of Si leaving the theatre have been added to the Gallery, including the set from last night. We also have scans from a recent issue of Polish magazine Hot, thanks to Agata.
Content-wise, I’ve re-added the Factfile and Style Rules pages in the Sienna section.
Before I started having computer problems a few weeks ago, I was in the middle of working hard on re-vamping our Media section, and today I have completed that! As part of our on-going site re-vamp I have converted the pages over to a new format (which doesn’t make much difference for you, but is easier for me to update), tidied up each of the pages, added new pages, and updated existing pages where possible.
There isn’t much new stuff, mostly because my graphic skills are very limited I have added a new page for Twitter backgrounds though, I’ve made lots of cute new Desktop Icons and some new Fan Signs. I’ve also added official movie Screensavers and Wallpapers, from various official movie sites.
The biggest updates, however, are in the Icons section. I’ve re-organised the pages and arranged the icons into categories, as you will see. We have some fabulous new icons (mainly in the Photoshoots category) by Jen and Lucile, so a big thank you goes to them for contributing their work. Lucile has also contibuted a gorgeous Wallpaper.
As I said above, my graphic skills are limited, plus I know a lot of you out there have fantastic graphic skills, so if you’d like to see your media displayed here at Sienna Online then please get in touch! You can read my recent post about contributing media here, but all you really need to know is that you can email me anything you’ve made and would like to share because I would love to see it
Whatsonstage.com has joined the celebration of the centenary of Terence Rattigan’s centenary by hosting two Outings to Rattigan plays in as many weeks. Last night *March 28th) saw 250 theatregoers make their way to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for Flare Path, Trevor Nunn’s first production as artistic director at the Haymarket. Starring James Purefoy (returning to the West End for the first time in ten years), Sienna Miller (back from a 2009 stint on Broadway in After Miss Julia) and the unstoppable Sheridan Smith (winner of Whatsonstage.com and Olivier Awards for her role in Legally Blonde) and following rave reviews we were all really looking forward to this war-time drama.
It is 1942. At the Falcon Hotel, on the Lincolnshire coast, Teddy a young RAF bomber pilot celebrates a reunion with his actress wife Patricia. They are thrown into upheaval when Peter, Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood heartthrob arrives and an urgent bombing mission over Germany is ordered. Who will make the sacrifice during the long night, as Patricia finds herself at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies.
An emotive tale of love and loyalty Flare Path had many audience members sniffing and the strength of the performances throughout ensures that you can’t help but get caught up in the drama of it all. Sheridan Smith as cheerful Doris captures the comedy and sympathy of her role with skill while the intensity between Purefoy (Hollywoord heartthrob indeed) and Miller (actress Patricia) is almost palpable. All the other members of the cast create an entirely believeable and touchingly British sense of the desperate cheerfulness of war-time.
We were then lucky enough to be joined by the triumvriate – Purefoy, Smith and Miller – for a post-show Q&A which was by turns amusing and thought-provoking. We talked about everything from the research they undertook for their roles, the affect the costumes have on the piece and the power of Rattigan’s Work. Purefoy made some interesting comments on this play in relation to British identity while Miller spoke of her pleasure at working with as an acclaimed director as Trevor Nunn while Smith was quite open about her experience of moving from Playboy Bunny costumes to knee-length florals and seamed stockings.
Once again sorry for the no updates this week – I’ve been having more computer problems. I’m hoping that everything is sorted now, and updates will start to resume. And we can’t have updates here without new candids, so I’ve added all of the new sets from the past 10 days! I think Sienna is looking fantastic still – and not just in terms of her style – she looks so happy and healthy … I guess theatre suits her I particularly love her April 20th outfit – perfect for summer!
Sienna and her Flare Path co-star Sheridan Smith will next month take part in the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s ‘Masterclass’ event. The Masterclass event set-up is as follows:
Masterclass aims to offer young people exceptional creative opportunities and experiences with leaders of the theatre industry. A year-round programme of talks, workshops, special projects and career advice is intended to give people insight into all aspects of theatre from writing and directing to acting and producing. Masterclass strives to provide all the events for free, so that people of all abilities, status and background can be inspired by and learn from masters of the craft.
Sienna and Sheridan will be making their appearance on May 19th, and will take part in a discussion about their theatre work, as well as answer questions from the audience:
Two of Britain’s hottest young stars of stage and screen, currently appearing to great acclaim in the Haymarket’s smash hit production of Rattigan’s Flare Path, will be in discussion with leading theatre journalist Matt Wolf and taking questions from the audience. A fantastic opportunity to gain insight into a life in the spotlight and the rigours of appearing in the West End.
The event will be followed by a special fundraising afterclass, giving a select group the unique chance to join Sheridan and Sienna for an exclusive champagne tea. For more details about the afterclass fundraiser click here.
I think you can book tickets for the discussion, but you will need to register first. Find out more HERE.
I was beginning to think Sienna (or the photographers of London) had dropped off the face of the earth as we haven’t seen new candids of her for a whole 2 days … but everything was back to normal last night! 42 photos of Sienna leaving the theatre last night have been added to our Gallery. Fortunately she seems to be taking the daily scuffle of paparazzi outside the stage door very well … it must be crazy for her!
Sorry for the shortage of updates here last week – I had a few problems with my computer and therefore was unable to update the site. Everything seems to be fixed now, so updates will resume. And I have started off by adding all of last weeks candids – almost 250 of them! We have a whole ton of them, and most are in HQ. I have to say, I think Sienna is looking fabulous at the moment! I love her outfits on April 5th & 7th. And don’t miss the sweet photos of Sienna hugging an emotional fan outside the theatre, on April 5th!
As I’m continuing to work on updating and building this site up again, I need to ask for your help! Our Media section is quite empty, and desperately needs some shiny new pieces to liven it up a bit. Therefore, I’m looking for contributions from you! I’m sure we have some creative visitors who love playing around in Photoshop, and I’d really love to display some of your artwork here on Sienna Online. You can send in any type of media – you can see the things we have pages for already, but if you have something we don’t already have a page for then we’d love it anyway! Wallpapers, icons, banners, fanart graphics, drawings, paintings, blinkies … anything and everything is appreciated!
If you’d like to contribute your work then just send me an email. All contributions are credited and we – and the other visitors – would be very grateful!
Sienna Miller is anxious about belly dancing in Just Like a Woman because she isn’t co-ordinated.
Sienna will portray the female lead in the drama set for release next year, which tells the story of a Chicago housewife who runs away to Las Vegas to enter a belly dancing competition.
The talented actress is looking forward to shooting the movie, although admits she is nervous about mastering complex dance moves.
“Yes, it will be interesting. I’m not the most co-ordinated person but we’ll see,” she told the British edition of OK! magazine.
The stunning actress is famed for her slender figure, and admits the prospect of gaining weight doesn’t fill her with joy. That said, she understands there are variations of the dance genre which don’t require such a large stomach. Sienna fears her movie producers want to give her a traditionally large midriff though.
“There is a certain type of belly dancing where you don’t need a belly, although I read they’re looking forward to putting one on!” she added.
